DLT Behebbare Schreibfehler

Hallo werte Kollegen,

Wir haben bei einem Kunden vor kurzem erst sein DLT VS160 Bandlaufwerk getauscht. Neue Bänder hat er ebenfalls bekommen. Trotzdem haben wir das Problem, dass er uns je nach Band zwischen 200.000 und 400.000 behebbaren Schreibfehlern meldet (Symantec Backup Exec 11d). Auch bekommen wir auf diese 80/160 GB Medien auch nur ziemlich genau 80 GB (eher ein bischen weniger) drauf, obwohl Hardware-Kompression lt. Backup Exec für das Laufwerk und den Sicherungsjob aktiviert ist. Klar, von 2:1 Kompression gehe ich nicht aus, aber dass da so gar nichts gehen soll kann ich mir nicht denken. Jemand eine Idee?

ich würde das Laufwerk mit xTalk überprüfen und auch schauen, ob die aktuellste Firmware drauf ist.

Hallo,

ich hab mal gelesen dass bis zu einem behebbaren Fehler pro Megabyte OK ist, also 1000 pro Gigabyte.

Neue Medien verlieren bei den ersten Backups (so ca. 3-5) noch übermäßig viel Magnetpartikel am Schreib/Lesekopf, so dass dort die Schreibqualität negativ beeinflusst wird.
Hier ist es zu empfehlen öfter mal das Laufwerk zu reinigen.

Wenn der Kopf defekt wäre, dann hättest du erheblich mehr behebbare Schreibfehler, nämlich einen pro nicht geschriebenem Block a 512 Byte.
Wenn einer der 4 Schreibköpfe auf dem Kopf defekt ist, dann gibt das ein paar Millionen behebarer Schreibfehler pro Backup.

Es kann natürlich auch sein dass der Kopf so langsam seinen Geist aufgibt.
Daher ist ein Test mit xTalk unbedingt zu empfehlen.

Neue Firmware schadet auch nicht.

Hallo,

danke für die schnelle Antwort. xTalk konnte ich entnehmen, dass die Hardware-Kompression deaktiviert war, obwohl mir Backup Exec angezeigt hat, die Kompression sei aktiv. Ich habe sie nun in xTalk aktiviert und hoffe, dass dies des Rätsels Lösung bezüglich Kompression war. Die Firmware ist Version 50, laut Quantum-Webseite ist dies die aktuelle Version. Anbei noch das xTalk-Log, eventuell kannst Du ihm ja entnehmen, woher die vielen behebbaren Schreibfehler kommen:

auf welche Übertragungsraten kommst du im Schnitt? Wir haben auch schon einen Kunden gehabt welcher seinen Webserver (mit so rund 1kB großen Dateien) gesichert hat und sich über ein neues defektes LTO wunderte, welches von HP verwiesen wurde da es "unsachgemäß" behandelt wurde (mehrere Millionen Skippings innerhalb weniger Wochen). Ursache war da geringe Datenrate von unter 100kB/s. BE schaltet übrigens die Kompression nur beim Zugriff ein und stellt sie danach wieder auf den Laufwerksstandard. Je nach deinen Daten (akt Office Dateien sind schon komprimiert, MPEGs gehen gar nicht und EXE nur sehr bedingt; gut gehen txt, html und xml Dateien) kann es auch sein das die Kompression konterproduktiv ist. Bei LTO und AIT wird sie dann in Echtzeit übersprungen. wie es bei DLT aktuell ist weiß ich nicht.

Hallo,

so, die letzte Sicherung (manuell gestartet) lief durch, mit einer Kompression von 1,17:1 und "nur" 2.200 behebbaren Schreibfehlern. Dei Datenübertragungsrate war gut 400 MByte/Minute. Soweit schonmal sehr schön. Die nächste Sicherung lief wiederum nicht durch, laut xTalk war die Kompression wieder ausgeschaltet. Kann es sein, dass Backup Exec die Einstellung zur Kompression wieder verstellt? Kann man das unterbinden?

Hallo,

also wenn das LW neu ist und nach mehrmaligem Reinigen dann immer noch Fehler auftreten ist das seltsam. Wie SamvanRat schrieb, sind DLTs empfindlich, wenn sie nicht streamen können, also die Daten nicht mit der entsprechenden Geschwindigkeit geliefert werden, da dann das Band immer wieder gebremst und beschleunigt und im schlimmsten Fall zurück gespult werden muss (das Laufgeräusch sollte bei der Sicherung gleichmäßig sein). Was man noch probieren könnte, wären Bänder anderer Hersteller, da es scheinbar Probleme mit unterschiedlichen Herstellern gibt (hatte persönlich bisher keine).
